To Bach Ke" erst viele Monate im Internet, bevor ihn anschließend

Mohinder Kaur Bhamra
is one of the most respected singers in the UK Asian community. She has
performed and recorded here since 1961, when she came to Britain from
Kenya with her husband Darshan. In her early years as a performer she
was unique, because having qualified formally in the study of the Sikh
sacred texts (technically a graduate in "Giani", and a performer of "Kirtan"
- hymns) she was able to officiate at wedding ceremonies, and then perform
both sacred and social music at the reception following the ceremony.
At this time (the 60's and 70's), no other woman in Britain was performing
this religious function, and certainly no other artist was booked for
both the ceremony and the dance-party.In the 1960's, when Mohinder started
performing, it was unheard of for men and women to dance together at a
wedding reception. Mohinder and her band, featuring her three sons, Kuljit,
Satpaul and Amarpal, and from 1973 joined by male singer A.S. Kang, pioneered
the musical wedding reception party which formed the basis for the modern
Bhangra scene. Nowadays, no wedding reception is complete without dancing.
From 1973 to 1983 Mohinder and Kang performed at hundreds of weddings
and social functions. During that time Mohinder recorded 8 albums, 3 released
by His Master's Voice, India, and Kang's solo album "Gidhian di Rani"
recorded in 1977 contained the first hit Bhangra song.
Mohinder retired from music making in 1989, but her 3 sons have followed
in her footsteps as performers. Kuljit Bhamra, the eldest, who accompanied
his mother at the age of 6 when she conducted her first wedding ceremony
in 1965, is now the foremost composer and producer of Indian popular music
in the UK, as well as being a fine tabla player in his own right. Satpaul
and Amarpal, her other sons are also excellent musicians and in high demand
as recording session players.
